Chairman's message

Wind power in the mainstream

Wind energy has come of age. These are exciting times as the industry’s transition into the mainstream, global power business accelerates. By 2010 the world market for wind power is predicted to double to €16 billion per year.

The enormous challenge facing mankind is not only to tackle climate change, but to meet the rising demand for energy and to safeguard security of energy supplies. Wind power is one of the few energy power technologies capabable of meeting these challenges, and it is ready for a broader roll out today; wind has the maturity, clout and global muscle to deliver significant reductions in CO2 emissions, whilst also enabling future energy prices to be minimised in the face of rising fossil fuel costs and reducing energy import dependence.
The leading experts, companies, decision and policy makers from around the world will gather in Athens for the 2006 European Wind Energy Conference (EWEC 2006) to discuss these issues, present international best practice and showcase the latest technological developments.

EWEC 2006 was the single most influential wind energy event in this year’s calendar.
In the 2006 conference a comprehensive range of issues were presented, discussed and debated, from resource assessment and innovative turbine design to market and policy developments, drawing on experience and initiatives from all over world. Senior politicians and representatives from international institutions and national governments have also presented speak this leading International wind event.

All the key wind energy players were at EWEC 2006.
The conference programme included over 500 outstanding oral and poster presentations from the top players in and beyond the wind power industry making EWEC 2006 the ideal forum for up to date and relevant information on business, policy, science and technology. Over 2650 people attended and 150 companies exhibited.

EWEC 2006 was the most effective opportunity to meet, network and be fully updated on all the key trends.
It provided a solid base for making informed decisions and developing future business strategies. Furthermore, it gave the delegates the tools, information and contacts necessary to play a key role in the multi billion dollar wind power industry.

Finally, I would like to thank all the sponsors, the Greek Ministry of Development for hosting the event; the European Commission, International Energy Agency, German Federal Ministry of Environment and Global Wind Energy Council for their support and the European Academy of Wind Energy for the development of the comprehensive scientific programme.
